s.o.s. ________ save our snow! • When you think of snow, you probably think of winter-snowball fights and snowflakes melting on your tongue. But snow's most dynamic season is actually spring. Spring's warm, sunny days are when snow's best features shine. Snow is not just for skiers and sledders. Food and electricity come from snow. As climate change warms our planet and melts snow, spring snow has a complicated role to play. All sorts of people are racing to save our snow, with solutions both big and small, whacky and wonderful. And some of them are kids.

CAROLINE HERSCHEL • As a child, Caroline Herschel seemed destined for a dull life filled with housework. She was born in Hanover, Germany in 1750. Her father, the leader of an army band, wanted Caroline to have a good education. But her mother expected her to stay home and help run the household. She attended school only long enough to learn to read, write, and do arithmetic. Her five brothers went on to study music, French, math, and science. Caroline was taught to clean, cook, and do needle work. She learned what she could from her father and brothers, as she recalled, “sitting in a corner with my knitting and listening all the while.” No one, including Caroline herself, could have guessed she would become a groundbreaking scientist.
