Mystery, magic, mischief and monsters abound in this slightly fantastical story of a human kid who wants to stay that way. Perfect for fans of Ransom Riggs and Maryrose Wood.
Max’s village is absolutely normal in every single way and on every single day—except Wednesday. Most of the townsfolk shutter their windows and lock their doors to hide away from the many peculiar things that happen—things like cats getting stuck in the vacuum cleaner and birthday cakes meeting fiery and horrific ends. But Max is too curious for that, and so, breaking every rule in the village, he searches out the cause of all the Wednesday weirdness.
What he uncovers is a secret so devious—so dastardly and mischievous—that life as he knows it will never be the same. Max himself is not the same. Suddenly the mysterious little accidents so common on Wednesdays are happening to him on Thursdays, Fridays—even Saturdays! What’s come over Max? And more importantly, is there any cure for a case of the Wednesdays?

“Max had most definitely caught a case of the wednesdays.” What are the wednesdays? That’s exactly what middle-schooler Maxwell Valentino Bernard tries to get to the bottom of in Bourbeau’s lighthearted and entertaining first novel. In a small village halfway up Mount Tibidabo, each Wednesday brings a plague of “mostly harmless” pranks: furniture is rearranged, cars refuse to start, and tea might be switched with perfume. Most residents hide indoors, waiting for Thursday, but Max is tired of spending Wednesdays cooped up with his colicky baby brother while his parents play canasta. Risking it, Max ventures outside, discovering that the wednesdays are a band of mischief-making, silver-eyed, implike creatures (Max also winds up with blue skin and smelling of garbage for his efforts). When wednesdaylike happenings begin to follow Max throughout the week, he learns that he is on his way to becoming a wednesday himself—a fate he works hard to avoid. Bourbeau’s story is filled with slapstick humor, and Beene’s occasional b&w illustrations help establish its gentle sense of magic and mayhem. Ages 8–12. Agent: Jessica Regel, Jean V. Naggar Literary Agency.

Gr 4-6-Life is good in Max's quiet village, unless it's Wednesday. On that day of the week, if something can go wrong, it will. Cats are mysteriously vacuumed up and birthday cakes become giant conflagrations. Even the birds have exceptional accuracy, and Max V. Bernard, who is not scared of Wednesdays a bit, wants to know why. When he discovers the cause of all of the mischief, however, his friends and family soon find that every day is strange when he is around. Will parapsychologist Dr. Conkle-Smoak's increasingly peculiar theories actually produce results? Max's humanity itself may depend upon it. The story is well put together, and the supporting characters add flavor. There is enough of a mystery to keep most readers interested until the very end, and Max is a strong protagonist willing to face his problems head on.-Wayne R. Max rebels by going outside on a Wednesday, the day when everybody locks themselves inside to avoid "the wednesdays," creatures who make everything in the otherwise normal village go peculiar. As Max befriends the monsters, he realizes that he is becoming one of them; he must get to the bottom of the phenomena before it's too late. An outlandish, pleasantly creepy romp.
