      The beautiful and intelligent Esther becomes Queen of Persia, concealing her Jewish heritage as a promise to her uncle until the day her courageous revelation helps save her people from slaughter. The story of Esther and the origin of the feast of Purim are narrated by Linda Stephens, whose slow-paced, subdued performance warms up as Esther's tale progresses. Author Wolkstein's well-written saga survives Stephens's sometimes flat tone and exaggerated enunciation. As Esther ages, her voice strengthens.
