Jo and Professor Bhaer's school for orphaned boys is the setting for this story, which is little more than a series of tender, moralistic vignettes of little interest today. Herbert's reading, however, goes a long way to make up for the deficiencies in the story. As Marmee and the mother that Jo March later becomes, Herbert projects a maternal resonance, which resonates with subtlety and nuance. For fans of Miss Alcott, the novel makes for a rich feast.
