De la Cruz (Frozen) launches a series set in the late 1920s of an alternate Earth where magic is real and the Franco-British Empire holds dominion over much of the world. While Princess Marie-Victoria faces imminent betrothal to Prussian Kronprinz Leopold, her childhood friend Aelwyn has returned from Avalon to take up a position as a court magician. American socialite Ronan Astor plans to use the season to land a wealthy, noble husband to revitalize her family's finances, and French noble Isabelle hopes to steal her lover Leopold away from his future wife. Romance, intrigue, betrayal, and magic are interwoven in this complex and somewhat overwrought drama, which also plays out in secret love affairs, hidden identities, and desperate conniving. The magic-dominated society de la Cruz creates has a certain faded charmâpart Gatsby, part Downton Abbeyâbut the ending suffers from pacing problems, with several developments and resolutions taking place offstage or in exposition. Likewise, the use of sex as a tool and a weapon lends an unsettling undercurrent to the story. Ages 14âup. Agent: Richard Abate, 3 Arts Entertainment. -

Jennifer Ikeda offers up a crisp, complex narration of a novel that features royalty, drama, and intrigue. Princess Marie is the heir to the throne. Aelwyn is a magician who will serve the kingdom. But both girls desire a different path, so they devise a dangerous plan in the hope of changing their fates. In a rich and engaging narration, Ikeda blends voices and accents to create distinct characters. Her narration alternates from the regal voices of the court to the brash tone of the American and the snobbish voice of the former fiancée of the prince. Overall, Ikeda captures the intrigue and drama with an air of mystery. S.B.T. © AudioFile 2014, Portland, Maine -

Gr 9 Up-Princess Marie-Victoria, heir to the powerful Franco-British Empire, is supposed to marry Prince Leopold of Prussia in this alternate history of the early 20th century. The marriage will unite the two kingdoms and end a long, arduous war, but Marie seems to be the only one immune to the Prince's charms. Wishing instead to marry her guardsman, Marie seeks the help of her best friend and mage Aelwyn. Meanwhile, Leopold's younger brother Wolf, Ronan Astor of New York, and Isabelle of Orleans are all traveling to London as the much-awaited season of parties and dances commences. Each seeks to find love but as their paths intertwine, they find that they may have to choose between duty and happiness. After the extensive cast of characters is introduced, the story quickly gains momentum. De la Cruz does not shy away from themes of rape and sexuality, and Isabelle's story especially is driven by these themes. Jennifer Ikeda enhances the text with her skillful narration, providing each character with a distinctive voice and personality. Fans of Kiera Cass's "The Selection" series and other romantic fantasies will enjoy this story.-Amanda Spino, Ocean County Library, NJ
